Overview
The Alkimos Community Battery was installed at the commencement of the Alkimos Beach Energy Storage Trial in 2016. The trial provided valuable insights on how community-scale infrastructure, combined with energy-efficiency incentives, could help to manage and reduce household electricity costs.
During the trial, the battery was used to offset the electricity use of participants. The battery charged from the energy system during periods when demand was low (early afternoon and overnight) and discharged during peak demand periods (late afternoon and early evening) when insufficient solar energy was being generated.
The trial started in 2016 and ran for five years. It saved 119 participants an average of $683.83 each.
Since the completion of the community trial, the battery has been directly supporting the energy system.
Site decommissioning and rehabilitation
The Alkimos Community Battery has reached its end of life, after 10 years of contributing to the Alkimos community and the wider energy system. The batteries and other asset components have been removed for recycling and reuse where possible, so that the site can revegetate and transition back to its original state.
The energy system will continue to be supported by Synergy’s big batteries in Collie and Kwinana.
